We are a forward thinking department that provides an open, exciting and challenging environment for all students to develop as musicians. Standards are high and large numbers of students participate in a diverse and vibrant programme of musical activities.

There is something to suit all musical tastes from the Symphony Orchestra and SATB Choir to the Big Band, Sax Quartet and Guitar Ensemble. There are many opportunities for students to perform in concerts at school and in the wider community and there are regular trips abroad.

The Music Department is housed in a purpose built suite of rooms with two fully equipped classrooms, ten practice rooms, large recital room, recording studio and a Mac Tech Suite. The department has sets of class percussion instruments, timpani, drum kits, many orchestral instruments, 12 upright pianos, 2 grand pianos, harpsichord, a large variety of electronic equipment and a comprehensive library of music.

There are many opportunities for students to perform in concerts at school, in the wider community and on tour abroad. Regular trips to concerts and operas are arranged and professional musicians are invited in to the department to lead a range of workshops and master classes.

In Spring 2012 the department staged a sell-out Gala Concert at the Anvil concert hall, Basingstoke, in celebration of the Cultural Olympiad. The autumn term of 2012 included a concert at St John’s Smith Square, London and summer 2013 featured a tour to Italy. 6th Form A-Level music students travelled to Berlin in February 2014 for a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and a night at the Berlin state opera. October 2014 saw an exciting side-by-side concert with Southbank Sinfonia at Turner Sims, and 6th Form A-Level musicians visited Vienna in February 2015. 2016 included workshops and side by side playing with the London Mozart Players and musicians visited New York in March 2017 for a tour of the Juilliard School and performances at the MET, Carnegie Hall, Village Vanguard Jazz Club and the Broadway Theatre for a performance of Miss Saigon.
