Rocket racing – Day 2 of the Science and Technology Festival
The second day of the Science and Technology Festival went off with a bang with all Third Year DT students getting the opportunity to test the rocket cars they have been designing and making for the past week. The DT department took delivery of a scale wind tunnel yesterday, kindly loaned to the school from Southampton University Aerodynamics Department. All students learnt about the aerodynamics behind racing cars before testing their creations in the tunnel and making predictions based on the results for lift and drag. When the scientific testing was complete and analysed, the cars were put in the ‘safe’ hands of Dr Gamblin and Mr Olden for a practical testing. Each of the cars were fired at high speeds down a kevlar cord to determine if the results from the wind tunnel would prove correct.
