Welcome to the Music Department
The Music Department is housed in a purpose built suite of rooms with two fully equipped classrooms, seven practice rooms and a recording studio. In September 2006 a new Recital Room and Music Technology Suite running Sibelius4, Cubase4 and max/msp were opened. The department has sets of class percussion instruments, timpani, drum kits, many orchestral instruments, 12 upright pianos, 2 grand pianos, a large variety of electronic equipment and a comprehensive library of music.
Music in the Curriculum
All First and Second Years study music as part of their curriculum. It becomes an option in the Third Year. There are currently 59 students taking GCSE Music (OCR) and 13 taking AS/A Level Music (OCR). In addition, we have Music Technology A Level (EdExcel) and there are 3 students following this course.
Opportunities to Play and Sing
Over 400 students participate regularly in the numerous bands, choirs and orchestras. Details of these are available on this website. There are three main concerts each year and several recitals, workshops, master classes and other musical events. Details of events from the last two years can be found on the website.
Instrumental Tuition
420 students have one to one tuition at school, provided by a team of 26 visiting music teachers. Details can be viewed on this website.
Music Scholarships
These are currently available to pupils entering the school at age 11 and 13. Auditions are held in early February each year. Candidates are asked to perform on their instrument(s) and do a short sight-reading exercise. Singing can also be offered.
